Air quality improvements are projected to weaken the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation through radiative forcing effects

چکیده

Abstract Observations indicate the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation-a fundamental component of ocean’s global conveyor belt-is weakening. Although causes remain uncertain, such weakening is consistent with increasing greenhouse gases. Recent studies also suggest that anthropogenic emissions associated air pollution can impact Circulation. Here, we use four state-of-the-art chemistry-climate models to quantify how efforts improve future quality, via near-term climate forcer mitigation, will Future reductions in aerosols, ozone and precursor gases alone induces end-of-century Circulation by up 10%. However, when methane are included, this offset. The responses best explained changes North radiative forcing. Thus, quality must target other including carbon dioxide avoid world’s major ocean circulation system.

Atlantic Dominance of the Meridional Overturning Circulation

North Atlantic (NA) deep-water formation and the resulting Atlantic meridional overturning cell is generally regarded as the primary feature of the global overturning circulation and is believed to be a result of the geometry of the continents. Here, instead, the overturning is viewed as a global energy–driven system and the robustness of NA dominance is investigated within this framework. Usin...

Changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Introduction: the concept of the MOC Climate models project a slow down of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) in the twenty-first century. This slow down is expected to affect climate over Europe. In particular, it damps the temperature rise due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The MOC is associated with the thermohaline circulation (ThC), which is the large-scale ocean c...

The Sensitivity of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation to Freshwater Forcing at Eddy-Permitting Resolutions

The effect of increasing horizontal resolution is examined to assess the response of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) to freshwater perturbations. Versions of a global climate model with horizontal resolutions ranging from 1.8° (latitude) 3.6° (longitude) to 0.2° 0.4° are used to determine if the AMOC response to freshwater forcing is robust to increasing resolution. In th...

Observed Basin-Scale Response of the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation to Wind Stress Forcing

The response of the North Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC) to wind stress forcing is investigated from an observational standpoint, using four time series of overturning transports below and relative to 1000m, overlapping by 3.6 yr. These time series are derived from four mooring arrays located on the western boundary of the North Atlantic: the RAPIDWestern Atlantic Variability...

On the Driving Processes of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

[1] Because of its relevance for the global climate the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) has been a major research focus for many years. Yet the question of which physical mechanisms ultimately drive the AMOC, in the sense of providing its energy supply, remains a matter of controversy. Here we review both observational data and model results concerning the two main candidates...
